Do you know your Stylist: Charles

As we continue on with getting to know our Stylist here at UBU Color Salon, this week is all about Charles. Charles is a Tampa, Fl Native and after graduating Bay Tech High school he worked various jobs but nothing fit.  He always loved doing hair on anyone that would sit still and let him experiment and being art driven so he decided to put the two together and it was time for Cosmetology School.  After graduating from Cosmetology school he got his first job at a salon in 2003 and it has been full steam ahead.

Charles is a Redken Colorist and has lots of connections and friend in the Redken family. He decided it was time to find a salon that was Redken driven. He decided to use his connections and called a dear friend that had worked in Redken for years to give him some ideas or directions of a salon that might be hiring.  After about 30 minutes he called back and told Charles to be at a Specific salon the next morning, so Charles put on his best outfit and showed up for his interview, as it turns out the Specific salon was UBU Color Salon.  Charles walked into the salon and immediately knew stylist that were already working at the salon.  He sat down with Penny for his interview and the salon fell in love with him and he fell in love with the salon. UBU Color Salon stylist are close and immediately welcomed Charles in the Family. Charles is coming up on this 7th year at the salon and we aren't letting him go anywhere.

Things about Charles you may not know, Charles is a walking Top 100 Billboard.  If there is anything you want to know about what band played what song, when it was written, what year it was #1, did the song go platinum especially from the 90's Charles is your man.  He loves going to concerts, anything from Sam Smith, Hall and Oats and Train to Celine Dion, he loves live music.  Put a glass of wine in his hand, let the music begin and Charles
is in Heaven.

Charles does like to travel recently going to Vegas, but I can't really tell you anything that happened because what Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas.  I will tell you that one of our other stylist did get him on the zip line that goes down the Vegas Strip. I can not confirm either way if he screamed the entire time he was zipping above the strip.

Now are you a match, do you love to travel, do you love music or want to talk about your favorite wine you need to be in Charles chair.  He will leave you with tons of music knowledge and walk out with rocking hair.

Do you know your Stylist: Penny

When it comes to Shabby Chic, Penny is your girl, the country girl with flare. Penny is a Florida Native, born and raised in good ole' Lutz, FL.  She has been in the hair industry since 1989 starting out after graduation as a Stylist Assistant for Omar Sassin.  After assisting and working for other salons in the Tampa Bay area, she decided to branch out and become a salon owner (UBU Color Salon) where she has now been open for 14 years. One thing you would never know about Penny is before she was put in the spot light of being a hairstylist she was super shy.  It took her love for hair to bring her out of that to the girl we all love.

Penny has always had a passion for hair, whether it is creating the perfect blonde to bring up the next generation hair stylist, give her the opportunity to help a future stylist and she is on it. Penny has mentored many of the stylist that currently working in the Tampa bay area. If you ask Penny about her hair passion she will first of tell you she loves to Mentor and Teach but 2nd to that she loves, loves, loves her blondes.  Penny has been voted #1 Blonde Stylist in the Tampa Bay area numerous times.

Now the fun facts about Penny, did you know Penny loves Karaoke?  You better believe it, whether she is busting out one of her favorite Stevie Nicks songs or singing about Pina Colada's, give her the mic and she will bust out in song.  Her love for music doesn't start and stop with Karaoke, if there is a Country music show in the area or Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty in driving distance, she will be there.

Beyond loving music Penny loves her family. She has a Fiance, Son, Daughter and 3 Grand kids that she loves to spoil.  If she gets the opportunity to take them to Disney or Busch Gardens she will jump at the opportunity.  Now the truth about Disney and Busch Gardens, she says it is for her Grand Kids but reality is Penny loves her Theme Parks.

Penny is a foodie at heart and don't get me started on her cooking.  She loves to go out to eat and trying to new restaurants in the area but when she is there she is not only enjoying the food but trying to figure out how to make it because her theory,"I can make it better" and trust everyone at UBU she can.

Now that you know a little about Penny, do your personalities match, fun loving, caring, all around good country girl?  If you said yes then you should come give Penny a chance to dazzel you with her Personality and give you good restaurants advice for the Tampa Bay area.

Do you know your stylist: Jeremy

Just like last week, it is time to get to know your stylist and this week it is all about Jeremy, Mr. Music Man.  Jeremy started his cosmetology Journey both School and Work in 2010, but in his youth he was throwing everything from Sun-In to Boxed color on anyone who would let him.  After years of working in the Corporate World he was fed up and at 35 wanted a change.  Hair had always been in the back of his mind and when the opportunity presented it self it was time to dive in.

in 2010 when Jeremy started Hair School he needed a job that work around that schedule and came across an add for a salon looking for a Front Desk/Receptionist position and as fate would have it the company was UBU Color Salon. Jeremy immediately called and set up an interview with the owner.  He came to the salon for the interview and sat down with Penny who immediately said, "I have bad news we had an interview for the same position right before you got here and we hired him, but tell me about you",  so Jeremy began to tell his story about his career change and the second he got to being in Cosmetology School, Penny perked up.  She said I have an Idea, do my hair!  With the Deer in Headlights look in his eyes he agreed.  Jeremy started working on Penny's hair and shaking like a leaf.  He looked at Penny and said "I don't know what I am doing, I just started school this week, but I will do my best."  Penny liked his personality and he immediately became part of the UBU Color Salon Family.

Now let's get to know Jeremy's personality.  If you have known Jeremy for very long you will know he has a love of Music. If he can find a live band or music festival that is exactly where he will be.  His musical interest are very wide from Jazz Music Festivals to Local Jam

Bands, Jeremy is at home when music is around.  After meeting his Partner he got to know the Grateful Dead and was lucky enough to go to their final 50th show in Chicago and since then has been to many other Dead and Company shows.  Not only is he an active listener and will dance and get to know everyone around him at the shows, he is a musician, Singer, Pianist, Songwriter and currently trying to learn Guitar. He grew up in the Church sitting beside his mom on the piano and quickly picked it up.  He worked in the Church music scene for 30 years until he moved to Florida where he still plays and sings but not on a professional level.

There are so many things about Jeremy that go beyond Music with his Decorating and Party Planning abilities and he loves to travel.  He recently got back from an Asia Trip that opened his eyes to the other side of the world.  Whether it is over seas travel or local travel, he will jump at the opportunity to go, go, go.

Do you know your Stylist: Carlos

As we talked last week it is time to get to know your stylist and this week we are starting with Carlos, Mr Personality. Carlos graduated hair school and began his career in 2010 but his passion for hair began in his younger years keeping his friend hair on point.

In 2016 Carlos came in for an  interview at UBU Color Salon for a Stylist Assistant position that had just opened.  After coming in for an interview it was time to get to know him so he came to our Galaxy photo shoot to hang out.  We were slammed, and put him behind a chair to help with blow outs, and he floored everyone with his incredible skill and basically was hired on the spot. A lot of times when people start working at new companies it takes a while for someone's personality to come out, but now with Carlos.  He was an immediate fit at the salon.

Now that we have that out of the way, it is time to get the Juicy Gossip about Carlos. You would never know it because he doesn't have an accent, but he is from New Jersey but moved to Tampa at an early age.  His family roots take him back to the Dominican Republic and he holds a true connection to his heritage but he is a Floridian.

As you all know living in Florida you really can't get away from the water which is perfect for Carlos as hanging out at the beach is one of his favorite places to relax, but don't let that fool you, he loves going out and traveling.  His most recent adventures took him to, Puerto Rico where he sailed through the sky on a zip line.  After just returning back to the states he has already begun planning a big trip to Greece.

Now take it from me as not only a Co-Worker but a friend, Carlos is ready to have fun.  Whether hanging at a friends house or going out in Ybor, you can't keep him off the dance floor. If there isn't a dance floor at someones house, he will make one or if out and about in Ybor, He will find someone to drag to the middle of the floor and dance circles around them.

And now that you know a little about Carlos and his personality, it's time to find out if you are a match.  Are you adventurous, always ready to laugh, love to travel and just want to have a good time, you need to come see Carlos.  You will leave the salon with amazing hair and in a great mood ready to rock your day.

St Patrick's Day, Is the Luck of the Irish upon your hair?

Well, St Patrick's day is upon us...and time to let your Lucky Leprechaun out and chase the rainbow as we are all looking for the color that will compliment who we are.

We all try to find the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or if nothing else. the stylist that is going to give you the gold with exactly what you want for your hair.  Everyone has a vision and dream of the look that they think will express the exact look they want.  Is it always attainable or will it even work for you?

As stylist it is our goal not to just look at a picture and tell the client yes, I can give you that cut or that color, but to guide you to what will work for you.  There are many things stylist have to consider when designing your look, for instance, facial structure, do you have a round face, square face, oval face, oblong face, triangle face or even a  heart shaped face, because all cuts will not work for all shape faces.   Also, skin tone has to be considered when choosing the color you should have in comparison to what color looks good on the model online.

So as a client what should you do.  Let your stylist know what color you love to wear, what you think looks best on your.  Let them also know your life style, do i put my hair up while you are working or working out because if you do a short bob probably isn't the style you need.  Let them guide you and be sure you are on track for the best look you can have.

As I said earlier, it's time to break out the GREEN, go see your stylist, have a consultation, open up and share who you are, and let them bring you good luck and design your look and while you are there, have them throw in a green extension in your hair to keep the pinching away for the 17th , St Patrick's Day!!

Bringing the Deva Out in Your Curl

Allowing your natural curls can be a hard to transition to, and basically that is because you are still trying to use a product that is made for straight hair. There are thousands of products to choose from, techniques and terminology to learn which can make it extremely confusing to know where to start. So let's stop and take a breath and break down everything you need to know about Deva transformations.
Most of the time people don't want to go natural with their curls because they are damaged, lifeless, or you’re just overall unhappy with them. If that is you it’s time for a Deva transformation which means no more shampooing, but finding the perfect routine to bring back your natural beautiful curl.  Your stylist can assist you in the transformation because it's not just technique but moving your product line to products without sulfates, silicone or parabens to get your rock star curl back. Using products that are specifically designed for your curl, like DevaCurl, can make a big difference in your curls health. When you use products with good for your curl ingredients, you can ensure that your curls are the best they can possibly be.
Now remember just switching to the products won't allow you to achieve the perfect natural curl overnight.  Trimming your hair to get rid of any breakage and switching to DevaCurl products is what moves you to the look you dream of but could take a couple of months before you will start seeing results, it is a process.  Don't give up it can be frustrating, but the results will be worth it.
The best place to start is right here at UBU Color Salon. UBU has certified DevaCut stylist that can help you in your transition.  A DevaCut is an important part in transforming your curls. It can make such a huge difference in the health of your hair. Remember that when you are talking to your stylist about your curl, be sure you ask questions.  Again as always communication is where it all starts. Your stylist can not only give you the DevaCut you need but direct you with the Deva products to start you on your journey.
Come see us at UBU Color Salon, your DevaCurl Salon.

Bonded Hair Extensions

This week let's talk about Bonded hair extensions, are they right for you?
Bonded hair extensions (aka Fusion) are bonded directly to your natural hair using an adhesives such as glue. This is probably the most time consuming application, they generally take approximately 3-4 hours to apply which is a great time for you and your stylist to get to know each other. The application involves a machine that basically  looks like a hot glue gun or a heated clamp that melts the glue to your natural hair.
Bonded hair extensions are managed and treated just like your real hair which is one of the popular reason people choose Bonded extensions.  You don't have to buy new products or change your routine you would normally use.  One thing you should remember is bonded extensions need to be re-positioned every 2–3 months as your hair grows. There are chemicals in the glue that can cause issues for your hair that can cause hair loss, breakage, and scalp irritation.  This might not be the best option for everyone.  Again, as always, the consultation will be where your stylist can direct you to the hair extension that is right for you.
The bonded hair extensions can last up to 4 months and are considered semi-permanent.  Remember that this is only an estimate as it depends on how fast your hair grows.
Go have a consultation with your stylist and see what your best option is.  Your hair goal is right around the corner.

Seamless Extensions

This week lets talk about Seamless Extensions, what are they and how do You keepthem fresh.

Seamless Extensions, also known as Tape in Extensions are and do exactly as you would expect.  They are pre-taped and then attache to each side of your own hair.  These extensions get the name seamless because they allow the stylist the ability to get the extension attached directly to the root for a perfect alignment giving the extension a perfect seamless look from root to end.

Things you should know about Seamless Extensions application and removal, it is not for the DIY hair community, you should not trust anyone except a professional.  Seamless Extensions have to be applied by a stylist for you to get
the best use of your extensions, knowing exactly where to place these extensions to get the full, long look you are wanting to achieve.  Once they are placed don't  try to remove them yourself, your stylist during application used a hot tool  that heated the glue to activate it to attached to your hair, this heating took is specifically used for applying this style of extension.  Also, when it is time to remove, your stylist will know exactly what to use to get the tape glue to release with out damaging your hair. NOTE: If they are in good condition when removed they can be reused.

Now how to keep your Seamless Extensions in the best possible condition, know what you can use on them.  With Seamless Extensions you have to be very careful using conditioner, keeping it off the root of your hair.  The conditioner can cause the tape to release and slip which will  cause a big mess for you and not give you the look you want and paid for. This is one of the biggest issues people have with Seamless Extension and this is why it is important to go to a knowledgeable stylist who not only knows how to apply, but also can point you in the direction of what products to use.  Generally they will want you to use a product that is less oily and harsh on the hair.

Are Seamless Extensions right for you.  Generally Seamless Extension are great for all types of hair.  They can be styled any way you like just remember the root area. IF you want a lot of volume at your root this might not be the extension for you, your stylist can direct you to the type of extension that will be best for you.  Just like any hair service have a consultation with your stylist before you start.  Talk about everything you like about your hair and what you like to do with it on a daily bases.  Do you tie it up, love Volume, want to tease the heck out of it....let them know so they can be your hair guide.  Communication is #1 so get into the salon and get the look you want.
