2020 Hair Trends - 5 Looks to Keep You Fashion Forward in the New Year!

It's a new year and for many that means a new style to consider. While most are making resolutions to stop smoking, eat better, travel more, we thought it might be helpful to curate a list of the top 5 hair trends to keep an eye on in 2020. These looks bring an element of fierce and fun to anyone who dares to try them.

While planning your new hair style, it's important to consider the best stylist to help you achieve your desired look. Make sure to give us a call at UBU and book an appointment with one of our master stylists today!

1) Lavender Sprigs Braid the sides of your hairline back in a regular three-strand braid, pinning in place in the center of your head. Then thread pieces of fake lavender through your braid, bobby-pinning the ends in place.

2) Incorporating Hair Combs - Brush your hair out (or keep your natural texture as is), then create a deep side part over one eyebrow. Scoop each side of your hair back, securing with comb hair clips, and smooth any flyaways with a layer of Kevin Murphy hairspray (found at UBU all month long)

3) Crystals - The easiest—and the quickest—way of recreating this look is to slide a crystal hair piece into one side of your hair, just behind your ear.

4) Twisted Half-Up Buns - Section off your hair from ear to ear (or, for a smaller bun, from temple to temple), then split the section down the middle, so you’re holding hair on each side of your part. Loosely roll each section inward, from your hairline to your crown, pinning in place, then twist and coil the ends into a bun on the crown of your head, pinning in place again.

5) Slicked Back - The slicked back style definitely has a certain look to it… it stands out especially when very much slicked back with product. Try Kevin Murphy strong hold finishing spray to keep this look in place - sold at UBU all month long.

We hope this helps you out as your looking for some new fresh ideas for your 2020 style. For any and all your color and styling needs contact us at UBU today, we would love to help you achieve your hair goals.

Cheers to 2020!

For the Mom's

Moms,

You know those days where you wake up, style your hair, put on your make up, and casually go about your day?  No?  Yeah, neither do we!

Although we all love our little bundles of joy, we know that mom life can get a bit hectic to say the least!  Usually when you’re running around trying to get your morning routine in the works, mom practically has to choose between a single bite to eat or brushing your hair; not to mention if you want to go on an entire family outing!  Juggling to get your kids (and husband) ready to leave can be insane!

We have some suggestions on how to make your morning hair routine a bit easier!

If you are not one to style your hair much, even when you do have time then we definitely recommend the wash-and-go approach.  With the right products you can rock your hair au naturale with ease.  For curly hair we suggest a nice curl cream, like the Kevin Murphy Killer.Curls.  Apply it when your hair is fresh out of the shower to define your curls and fight the frizz that comes with them.  If your hair is less curly or just wavy you can opt for a more light-weight product like Kevin Murphy Killer.Waves.  For straighter hair just find yourself a nice leave- in conditioner and you’re good to go.

1)  The Wash-and-Go

If you are not one to style your hair much, even when you do have time then we definitely recommend the wash-and-go approach.  With the right products you can rock your hair au naturale with ease.  For curly hair we suggest a nice curl cream, like the Kevin Murphy Killer.Curls.  Apply it when your hair is fresh out of the shower to define your curls and fight the frizz that comes with them.  If your hair is less curly or just wavy you can opt for a more light-weight product like Kevin Murphy Killer Waves.  For straighter hair just find yourself a nice leave- in conditioner and you’re good to go.

2) Overnight Braids

If your hair needs a little guidance but you still want to use the “air dry” approach you can always opt for overnight braids!  Overnight braids are great because you can take the time when the kids are in bed to braid your hair at night.  After you get up in the morning just take them out, apply a little product like a pomade to smooth down frizz, and you have a nice wave for the day!  The best part of this approach is that you can achieve it with no heat products!  The trick is to braid your hair when it’s almost completely air-dried, because if its super wet then it won’t dry all the way over night.

3) Dry Shampoo

Ladies!!! Dry shampoo!! The holy grail of “on the go mommy” products!  Dry shampoo can make flat, greasy, sweaty, dull hair look presentable quickly and practically effortlessly.  Just simply spray onto your roots to absorb the excess oils on the scalp and go.  Try the Kevin Murphy Doo Over ... sold at our salon all month long!!

Now don’t let the word “shampoo” fool you.  Dry shampoo is not meant for cleansing your hair but is handy for a quick fix.

4) Accessorize

Sometimes it’s easier to just simply hide it.  You can get a cute printed headband or a cute claw clip, use them for down hair or to accent a cute ponytail or quick two-second top knot.  Add a ball cap over a ponytail or low braids for a cute sporty look.  So quick, so easy, so cute!

5) … Chop it off

Yes, you read that right.  Cut your hair!  Lucky for you, our blog about face shapes will tell you exactly which cute bob or pixie cut that will suit you best.  Finding a simple, low maintenance cut will take out all of the everyday hair drama.  Voilà!

So moms: stress no more!  Use any of these quick and simple tricks to get going each day and be efficient and look cute as a mother! ;)

Men's Hair Needs LOVE Too!

“Will you please tell him his hair looks sexy pushed back?”

Men’s hair needs love too…and apparently more than we thought! Ever since the man-bun left its mark in 2015, Google searches about men hair trends and styles have skyrocketed! Men’s hair trends have evolved and men are spending just as much time (if not more), as women do on the effort put into their hair.

Whether you rock the short fade or want to experiment with medium to longer locks, we got you covered!

Lets touch on some classics…

The French Crop - If you want something low maintenance, yet still very much in style you can stick with this style. This haircut is perfect for someone who has a more casual, laid back approach to his look. If you’re in and out of the gym, or just simply want something that won’t take much product or dedication. The French crop is simple, yet clean and meant to be kept natural-looking. Upkeep is less about styling time and more about keeping up a nice trim; however, if you do want to add a little product to this look you can get away with just a little hairspray like the KevinMurphy Session Spray Flex Hairspray ( available @ UBU all month long!!)

The Buzz Cut - Another low maintenance, yet timeless every day style is the ever so popular.  You achieve this by “buzzing” the sides to a tapered effect with electric clippers; the top of the head can be buzzed short or kept slightly longer.  This is also a great method if you’re dealing with a thinning or receding hairline.  The buzz cut allows for little to no maintenance and can suit any occasion.

The Slick Back - Another timeless classic yet does require a little more styling effort.  The slick back was originally started in the 1920s to give man a clean styled haircut that wouldn’t be messed up when wearing a hat.  The slick back works best with straight hair and a full hairline. Here, the sides are tapered and the top is heavier. A little more effort is required when styling the slick back hair cut. It is best to achieve your look by blow drying the top back, and keeping the slick back hair cut back with a pomade. To create a strong, matte look hold use Kevin Murphy’s Rough Rider Styling Clay ( also available @ UBU all month long!!)

The Side Part - A transition from the slick back that is a little easier to achieve, this is a super versatile look that will suit most face shapes and hair types; however, can run the risk of looking more like a combover with hair that is too thin or long on top. The goal is to taper the sides and keep a little length on the top that allows your hair to be parted on the side but still short enough to look neat. Styling is super simple and can be achieved by parting you hair on the side, while wet, then adding a gel or pomade to add some texture and hold. A great way to achieve this looks is to style with a little Kevin Murphy - Un Dressed paste ( also available @ UBU all month long!!)

Now let’s add some length. If you have the ability to grow out your hair a bit, the shoulder length cut is a great look that can transition easily to and from a beachy look to a textured business look. This cut is perfect for the man with a little bit of wave or thickness to his hair.  If your hair is too straight, you might struggle to keep this style in place and if your hair is too curly it will be difficult to keep smooth.  With the shoulder length look you want to keep styling products to a minimum, as a more natural look suits this cut best. If you want to add a little product we suggest a light texture spray such as the Kevin Murphy Hair Resort Spray. This will give you a sexy surfer look that can look effortless.

The Pompadour and the quiff - Both have a similar element to them; however, the quiff is a little less dramatic than the pompadour. You need to grow out the front, while keeping the sides and back short. The quiff is a version that can be a little messier and casual; whereas, the pompadour is polished and clean. Both hairstyles require you to blow dry the hair up and back to style.  To establish height in the pompadour you can use a product like a mousse to create a lift to the root. Keep in mind that both the pompadour and quiff do not suit a receding hairline, as this style emphasizes the forehead.

Whether they are rocking the buzz cut, slick back, or a high pompadour, men consider their hair a reflection of their identity. Just like women’s haircuts, men’s styles can range from very simple and low maintenance to styles more intricate and time consuming. All there is left to do is find your style and rock it confidently!

Face Shape vs. Hair Length – What Style is Right for You?

Have you ever seen one of your girlfriends, or a loved celebrity with an adorable new hair style and thought “I could never pull that off”?  Believe it or not, the shape of your face has a tremendous amount of influence on whether a trendy new hair cut would even suit you well.  Rather than opting for the latest trend, we will show you how take a look at your face contours and determine what cuts and styles pair best with YOU and keep you looking FIERCE!

Before choosing a hair style you need to determine the shape of your face. At UbU Color Salon we are experts at this. Features like your jawline, chin shape, forehead width, and cheekbones tell you what shape category you fall into, such as, oval, heart, round, square, diamond, or rectangular.

Oval

Oval faces are longer than they are wide, with the cheekbones being the widest part of your face.  Your jaw and forehead will be rounded at the same width, and your chin will have no hard lines.  Think: Blake Lively.

In styling your hair with an oval shape, you want to create the illusion of width.  Bangs are a great way to add width, as the horizontal line will help to widen the face.  Oval face shapes can get away with long locks or a cropped cut with subtle to minimal layers.  Styling with curls or waves will help to keep your hair from dragging down the shape of your face.

Heart

In having a heart shaped face, the forehead is the widest part. Some will see the appearance of a widow’s peak and the chin is usually pointed.  Reese Witherspoon is the perfect example of a heart shaped face.

If you want to keep some length, you can balance the width of your brow with side swept bangs and even out the jaw line with waves or curls that start below the ear. You can opt for a bob, which will create fullness in the jaw.  However, pixie cuts with textured ends work wonders for this face shape!

Round

If you have a round face, like Chrissy Teigen, your face likely has soft or no angles. The sides of your face are curved outward creating a rounded look in both your cheeks and chin.  This rounded look can give you a younger appearance (almost like a kid) so you want to add length to your face with your hair style.

Long, staggered layers will add length to your face.  If you style with curls, stick with loose curls because tight curls will highlight your faces’ width.  As far as bangs are concerned, stick with side swept bangs; straight bangs make a round face appear too small.  You will want to add volume to the top, or crown, of your head, especially with shorter cuts. Wanna spice things up? A choppy pixie cut or an edgy fauxhawk would work perfectly with a round face.  Make sure to avoid styles like a slicked back ponytail, a bob, or a single-length haircut if you have a round face.

Square

Someone with a square shaped face will have a strong jaw and minimal curves to the face.  Their cheekbones and jaw are equal in width.  They will have strong features like Olivia Wilde or Angelina Jolie

The goal in picking a hair style for a square shaped face is to soften the jawline. Long, face framing layers help to do this.  In addition, longer side swept bangs with a side part will offset the face and soften your features.  If the goal is to have a little bit of a shorter or medium length, a layered or textured bob with flat ends will work great.

Diamond

With a diamond shaped face, you will see both a narrow jaw and forehead. The high cheekbones are the widest part of the face. Much like a heart shaped face, a diamond will have a pointed chin, but the hairline will not be as wide. Who other than Jennifer Lopez to be the perfect example of a diamond!

For a diamond shaped face your goal will be to soften the angles of the face and balance the cheekbones. Medium-long face framing layers with soft waves and a deep side part work perfectly!  For a shorter length try a short crop, but with minimal volume on top. To make your features pop, try a slicked back pony to show off those cheekbones and widen the forehead.

Rectangular

Rectangular faces will look very similar to a square shaped face but are longer than they are wide.  Your forehead, cheeks, and jawline will all be the same width and your chin has a very slight curve.  Sarah Jessica Parker is a nice example of someone with a rectangular face shape.

Your goal here will be to create width in the face. You can create width with curtain bangs and use face- framing layers to enhance your cheekbones. You want to avoid overly long styles with a rectangular face if possible.  If the goal is to have long hair try a nice blowout or soft curls when styling.

Now that you have the secret to what works best for your face, it's time to book your appointment!

We would love to make your #hairgoals come to life!
